About

This website is ALIVE. It is interactive, a shared space for stories of humanity, womanhood, spirituality, travel, nature, philosophy and creativity. It begins as a place for me to process the hundreds of small moments that I’ve experienced in the last few years, traveling and living, that beg to be shared with those who are curious and want to see the world through my lens.

Since 2018, it shifts as I shift, from wandering to rooting, knowing that we are always doing both.

This is a place for those who wander deep and wide, in themselves and the world, seeking acceptance while pushing for change.

Kristen Sawyer

I am an educator, writer, traveler, big-hearted and creative soul. From 2015-2020, I’ve witnessed our shared humanity living and traveling in countries different from that which I call home, the United States. In Ecuador, I taught English and published La Revista Zero, a bilingual community magazine. In Costa Rica, I worked at Rancho Margot, writing, conducting interviews with workers, and learning about sustainable living in the cloud forest. In the summers, I led trips with National Geographic Student Expeditions, to Costa Rica and Fiji, guiding American teenagers in what it means to live curiously, conscientiously, and compassionately. I’ve led university students on semester programs studying public health in DC, New Delhi, São Paulo, and Cape Town and students on a program to India and Nepal to study religion and spirituality. I’ve also worked with Adventure Risk Challenge in Yosemite, leading students on backpacking trips while teaching creative writing.

Currently, I’m rooted back home in Tucson, Arizona. I’ve been here since early 2020, right before COVID. So much has changed in these last three years. I created my facilitating and coaching business, Inner Compass Learning. I began working for Ironwood Tree Experience, guiding and connecting with teens in our natural world. I found deep love, got married, rooted into a home, and as of 2023, became a mother. I’m enjoying watching The Wandering Roots shifting into Rooting.
